Description
Memorial takes the form of a richly illustrated presentation scroll executed in calligraphy, signed on behalf of the 'Subscribers of the Southern District (Post Office) War Fund' by pOSTMASTR: Greenock Postmaster, Ayr Postmaster, Paisley Postmaster, Kilmarnock Postmaster, The Secretary & Treasurer of the Surveying Dept. Dumfries and The Assistant Secretary & Treasurer of the Surveying Dept, Dumfries. The letter describes the establishment of a fund to assist the families and dependents of the 34 men of the Southern (Scotland) District Post Office who rejoined the army for active service in South Africa 1899-1902. Example of a presentation scroll, as distributed to Scotland South District staff that served - this example was given to C MacNab. Presented to PO Scotland in 1973 - framed by them and retained at Edinburgh HPO until closure of the building in 2001. Deposited at British Postal Museum and Archive in March 2005.
