- Description
- A very ornate and elaborate memorial. Vertical rectangular metal plaque. Heavily decorated frame of copper flower heads and leaves, with crossed cornets entwined with a wreath at the bottom, surrounds a central field of brass which itself has a slim blue border. Dedication at top centre with regimental badge between dates and regimental name beneath. The names are set out in two sections - the upper section carries the names of those who went out to South Africa in 1900, whilst the lower section carries the names of those who went out in 1901. In the upper section the names of the casualties are given with the date and place where they died or were wounded in a central panel, above which are given the names of those who served in the four Sections of the Company, entered in four columns. To the panel's left are listed the names of those in the Gun Section, whilst to its right are given the names of those on the Staff of the 8th Battalion, above a list of those who went out in a Reinforcing Draft in April 1900. Beneath the panel a list of Awards and Commissions granted is set across the width of the plate. The lower section is entitled 'Relieving Draft Joined Company During 1901', beneath which the names are set out in columns in two sections - four columns in the upper section, eight columns in the lower section. Beneath the columns are listed the Casualties of the Relieving Company in two columns, again with the date and place of death recorded. At the bottom of the plate are listed the names of 11 men who joined other Companies in four columns.
