- Description
- Hospital with title on a stone tablet at the entrance and a dedicatory wooden board placed elsewhere. When it first opened the hospital took the form of two private wards and two public wards. Members of the Contributory Scheme were admitted for free. Extensions of an X-Ray room, an emergency ward and a sterilising room were made to the hospital in 1925. In 1926-1927 electric light was installed and a gift of money to upkeep the grounds was donated. The hospital stands on over 6 acres of ground, 5 acres of which was given in 1926-1927 subject to the restriction that no building may be erected on the southern part of it and that it may not be used for any purpose which might become a nuisance to the patients and staff.

Comments: The original one acre site was given by Mrs John Wilkinson in 1919. An additional plot of over 5 acres was conveyed by the chairman of the Executive Committee, Mr John Dixon JP in 1926-1927. The breakdown of costs was: building - £4,366; equipment and furniture - £783; endowment fund - £3,673; maintenance fund - £168; - x-ray room and equipment - £570 from the Sunday and Saturday Fund; John Dixon Emergency ward - £200 from Mr John Dixon; fund for upkeep of the grounds - £500 as a gift from Mr R T Booty. A small deficit on the building fund was paid off in the first year and a legacy left by Mrs Sarah Cremer of £300 was added to the original endowment fund. In the original phase of the fundraising before additions were made to the hospital, the majority of the cost (£7,185) was donated by people from North Walsham.
