- Clitheroe Advertiser and Times - Friday 20 January 1939 Page 4 CLITHEROE had more than a passing Interest in the unveiling of a memorial tablet at the Darwen Grammar School last Saturday, by reason of the fact that the accompanying roll of honour, in book form, is the work of two of our townsmen. The volume, which will record the names former students at the school who served the Great War, is as beautiful an example of modern binding as I have been privileged to see. Its open measurement is 22in. by 16in., the leaves of best parchment skins being sewn together with fine cream art silk. The difficulty of treating this strong, hard-wearing material has been overcome by neatly jointing the leaves with linen — a big factor in the enduring qualities of the book. Each leaf is edged full gold and headbands of red and gold embellish the interior. The cover is a deep red Levant morocco, its only decoration — a medium Oxford border, front and back serving to display the fine natural grain of the leather, yet imparting a distinctive finish to a lovely, dignified tome. It is the work of Mr. T. Bailey, who is charge of the bookbinding department at the “Advertiser and Times works, and a teacher at the Accrington School of Arts and Crafts. The prodigious task of illumination and lettering of some 600 names is undertaken by a very capable artist and caligraphlst. Mr. J. L. Higson, of Pimlico - road, now. on the staff at the Darwen Grammar School. Mr. Higson also has associations with the Accrington School of Arts and Crafts, where he received much of his later training and won several successes. Clltheronians may Justifiably feel proud that such an admirable volume as the one in question can be produced in its entirety locally.
