Inscription
SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF/ JOHN ARNOLD CUTHBERT QUILTER/ SECOND SON OF SIR W CUTHBERT QUILTER BART OF BAWDSEY/ MANOR IN THE COUNTY OF SUFFOLK BORN JANUARY 29 1875/ HE JOINED THE GRENADIER GUARDS IN 1897 AND SERVED/ WITH DISTINCTION IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN/ BEING MENTIONED FOR CONSPICIOUS BRAVERY AT THE/ BATTLE OF BIDDULPHSBERG HE WAS GAZETTED LIEUT-COLONEL/ TO THE HOOD BATTALION OF THE ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION/ IN SEPTEMBER 1914 WHICH BATTALION HE COMMANDED AT/ ANTWERP (OCTOBER 4TH 1914) AND LATER IN GALLIPOLI/ IN WHICH PLACE (ON MAY 6TH 1915) WHILE LEADING HIS/ MEN HE LAID DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS COUNTRY/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS St. John XV 13.
