Description
Stoen cairn surmounted by tapered capstone. Dedicatory inscription engraved on stainless steel plaque on front of cairn. Coloured crest of 47 Squadron and a blue, yellow and red pennon depicted on top of plaque. Badge of the RAF Association and the Blue Circle Company symbol towards the base.

HALIFAX RT 922/ ON THE 13 FEBRUARY 1947, HALIFAX RT 922 OF 47 SQUADRON ROYAL AIR FORCE,/ CRASHED ADJACENT TO THIS CAIRN DURING A MISSION TO AIRDROP SUPPLIES TO THE/ SNOW-BOUND COMMUNITIES OF GRINDON AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS./ THE CREW AND PASSENGERS WERE ALL KILLED/ THE CREW/ (NAMES)/ PASSENGERS - PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS/ (NAMES)/ THIS CAIRN WAS ERECTED IN 1999 AS A RESULT OF A PROJECT LED BY THE LEEK BRANCH OF/ THE ROYAL AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION/ THE CAIRN WAS GENEROUSLY DONATED BY THE BLUE CIRCLE CEMENT, CAULDRON WORKS, WATERHOUSES/ AND CONSTRUCTED BY MR. KEN HALL, (EMPLOYEE)/ THE PROJECT WAS SUPPORTED BY:-/ MT. HARRY BEECROFT (LANDOWNER), STAFFORDSHIRE MOORLANDS DISTRICT COUNCIL & GRINDON PARISH COUNCIL
