PLAIN RECTANGULAR BRASS PLAQUE PLACED WITHIN AN ORNATELY CARVED STONE FRAME. INCISED INSCRIPTION IN BLACK AND RED COLOURED LETTERING. CROSS WITHIN A WREATH CARVED AT THE TOP CENTRE OF THE FRAME FLANKED BY FOLIATE DESIGN URNS AND FOLIATE DESIGN CARVED ON THE SIDES OF THE FRAME. SHEATHED SWORD CARVED AT THE BASE OF THE FRAME WITH SHIELD BELOW IT.

TO THE MEMORY OF/ MAJOR GENERAL SIR JOHN/ EARDLEY WILMOT INGLIS K.C.B./ COLONEL OF THE 32ND REGIMENT OF FOOT/ AND COMMANDING H.M.'S FORCES IN THE/ IONIAN ISLANDS. WHO BY HIS/ ENDURING FORTITUDE AND PERSEVERING/ GALLANTRY IN THE DEFENCE OF THE/ RESIDENCY OF LUCKNOW FOR 87 DAYS/ AGAINST AN OVERWHELMING FORCE/ MAINTAINED THE HONOUR OF THE BRITSH/ ARMS AND CONTRIBUTED TO THE/ TRIUMPH OF HIS COUNTRY OVER A/ CRUEL AND TREACHEROUS ENEMY./ HE DIED AT HOMBURG ON THE 27TH/ SEPTEMBER 1862 AGED 47 YEARS./ THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY BROTHER/ OFFICERS SERVING IN THE IONIAN ISLANDS/ IN JUST ADMIRATION OF HIS PUBLIC SERVICES/ AND IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE/ OF HIS PRIVATE WORTH.
