TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ EDWARD GRONOW HOWELL/ LIEUT. 2ND DERBYSHIRE REGIMENT (SHERWOOD FORESTERS)/ BORN AT AVON VIEW IN THIS PARISH/ FEBRUARY 25TH 1879/ KILLED IN ACTION FEB. 12TH 1902/ IN THE GREAT BOER WAR/ AT KLIPP RIVER STATION, TRANSVAAL/ WHILE DEFENDING A WOUNDED BROTHER OFFICER/ WHO HE REFUSED TO LEAVE/ THOUGH URGED BY HIM TO DO SO/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIEND.
