- THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED BY THE URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL OF/ STANDISH WITH LANGTREE, TO RECORD THE NAMES OF THOSE FROM THEIR DISTRICT,/ WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE LATE BOER WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA,/ WHICH COMMENCED ON OCTOBER 11TH 1899, AND TERMINATED ON MAY 31ST, 1902./ (Names) / OF THE ABOVE, LANCE SERGEANT THOMAS HALTON WAS MORTALLY WOUNDED IN ACTION AT BELMONT S.A./ 23RD NOVEMBER, 1899, AND PRIVATE KENNEDY BALL DIED OF BURNS AT HOWICK, S.A. 15TH AUGUST 1900.
