- Description
- The cenotaph is the centrepiece of the newly-created entrance to Zetland Park erected on a triangular extension to the northern side of the park. As originally built it comprised twin tall wrought iron gates between square pillars surmounted by elaborate funeral urns, with iron railings set on a low wall extending outwards towards the perimeters, and inward to low intermediate square pillars carrying the dates of the Great War (1914 1919) carved in relief on shields on their front faces. Curved railings extended from the pillars to the wings of the base of the cenotaph, which carries the leaded inscriptions on an array of large sandstone tablets. The cenotaph itself is a battered hollow pillar surmounted by a controversial depiction of the British Lion mauling the defeated German Imperial Eagle. A carved Latin cross with a raised triangular section cross at its centre sits above the leaded dedication, which is carried on a protruding section on the front of the pillar. There is a further carved inscription across the base below this. The cenotaph is mounted on a raised paved area - once two steps above the surrounding level, but now one step above. Low steel railings enclose the base. After WW2 changes were made to the arrangement to allow for the commemoration of the fallen from that conflict. The railings and low wall between the intermediate pillars were removed to permit circulation around the cenotaph on an extended base, and sandstone tablets carrying the leaded WW2 inscription were inserted into the rear of the wings of its base. An additional small grey granite tablet carries a commemoration from the Korean War.

- History
- In 2016 a War Memorials Trust grant of £1,500 was offered towards a detailed condition survey and report to understand the condition of the memorial before a larger project is undertaken. The report included recommendations for an appropriate programme fIn 2017 a grant of £22,225 was offered towards undertaking works specified by the professional advisor who was appointed in 2016. The build up of alge and pigeon guano was having a detrimental effect on the memorials stonework and was obcuring the inscriptions, the pointing in the construction joints was failing and there were areas where the stone had small fissures and cracks which was allowing water into the stone. Some of the lead lettering on the memorial were missing and the deterioation of the paint finish was making the inscriptions difficult to read. To adress these issues the memorial was cleaned using water and natural bristle brushes, the memorial was re-pointed with a lime based mortar and missing letters were replaced and the inscription was re-painted. Further work was carried out in 2021, which included the removal and refurbishment of the gates at the sides.
