- Description
- The memorial is a grey stone stepped, square section base/plinth, with a square section pedestal block above it and a bronze statue of a private of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders above this in full pack and wearing a Tam ‘o’ Shanter beret. He appears to be striding forward purposefully. There are three low stone steps to the base/plinth. The main pedestal block is dressed stone blocks in six or eight courses. The pedestal block has several brass plaques fixed to it. The Dedication Inscriptions for WW1 and WW2 are on the same face as the soldier faces. On the faces on either side of this are inverted triangular brass plaques bearing the countries or place names of WW1 battles. On the rear face of the block is a brass plaque bearing the burgh's coat of arms surrounded by thistles and surmounted by a lion rampant. The approximate height of the stone monument is 5m and the lowest step is about 4 or 5m by 4 or 5m. He carries a rifle in his right hand with the butt resting on top of the block. The soldier is some 2 ½m high. He looks just over lifesize. Houston Square is in the centre of the town of Johnstone and the memorial is set in a wide cobbled and slabbed area with a bandstand some 30 or 40m away.
