Sacred to the Memory/ of/ MAJOR HENRY BALFOWR of/ His Majesty's Royal Regiment of Foot./ A Dutiful and much Beloved Son/ And one of the Best of Brothers/ Who was unfortunately cut off/ By an Accident much to be regretted/ On the 1st Day of October 1776./ In the 35th Year of his Age. / This Stone was erected/ In Testimony of Brotherly Love, by/ MAJOR NISBET BALFOWR/ Of His Majesty's 4th regiment of Foot/ Aid de Camp/ to/ Sir William Howe in America.

Major Balfour, of the firft or royal Scots regiment, and his brother, be-ing out a fhooting, the Major fired his piece at fome birds, and defired his bro her to fire alfo, who was preparing to do fo, when unluckily the Major ftepped forward before the muzzle of his brother's gun, which went off, and lodged the fhot in the Major's head, who expired a few hours after. The Major was univerfally efteemed. No words can exprefs tlie agony of his bro-t er upon this melancholy cataftrophe.
