- THE ANCIENT BELLS IN THIS TOWER WERE/ RESTORED IN 1940 BY THE GENEROSITY OF/ JAMES PARIN, ESQ. RECTOR'S ASSESSOR/ ON THE UNIVERSITY COURT./ THE KATHERINE BELL, BROKEN AND SILENT FOR/ MORE THAN TWO CENTURIES WAS REFOUNDED IN THE HOPE THAT IT/ MAY NEXT BE HEARD RINGING IN RIGHTEOUS PEACE/ AFTER VICTORY IN THE CURRENT STRUGGLE AGAINST/ OPPRESSION./ THE ELIZABETH OF ST LEONARD BELL WHICH/ TELLS THE HOURS WAS RESTORED AS A TRIBUTE TO THE VALOUR/ AND SACRIFICE OF THE MANY MEMBERS OF THE/ UNIVERSITY WHO FROM 1939 ONWARDS WILLINGLY/ FORESOOK ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM TO SERVE/ WITH HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES IN THE FIGHT TO/ PRESERVE LIBERTY AND TRUTH./ MAY THE BELLS RING IN UNISON TO WELCOME THESE/ LOYAL SONS BACK TO THE UNIVERSITY THEY LOVED AND/ HONOURED./ J.C.
