ELABORATE WALL-MOUNTED STONE TABLET. INCISED BLACK LETTERING. TOP OF TABLET SHAPED AT STYLISED TREFOIL. UNIDENTIFIED SHIELD AT TOP CENTRE.

TO THE MEMORY OF/ WILLIAM DALGLEISH PLAYFAIR,/ LIEUTENANT IN THE THIRTY-THIRD REGIMENT/ BENGAL NATIVE INFANTRY,/ WHO,/ ON THE 16TH FEBRUARY, 1846,/ IN THE MEMORABLE BATTLE OF SOOBRAON,/ WHILE GALLANTLY LEADING HIS COMPANY/ IN THE ATTACK MADE/ BY SIR ROBERT DICK'S DIVISION/ ON THE RIGHT OF THE SIKH INTRENCHMENTS,/ FELL MORTALLY WOUNDED,/ IN THE 25TH YEAR OF HIS AGE/ THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED/ BY HIS BROTHER OFFICERS,/ TO WHOM HE WAS ENDEARED/ BY HIS AMIABLE DISPOSITION AND STERLING CHARACTER/ HIS MORTAL REMAINS/ LIE NEAR THE FIELD OF BATTLE, IN A SOLDIER'S GRAVE UNMARKED AND NOW UNKNOWN.
