- Description
- Shrine with carved wooden frame and rails at the entrance. Wreath and WW1 dates carved into entrance frame. Dedicatory plaque mounted on wall to side of entrance, also a cenotaph of an empty tomb of grey Corsehill sandstone Also a stained glass window, the gift of the young people of the congregation, depicting a mortally wounded young knight, kneeling in prayer and holding up his cross-hilted sword to heaven in token for his faithfulness to death. Above his head shines the victor's crown. A thorn bush breaking overhead into blood-red flower symbolised hardship turned into victory. On the thorn sits the dove of peace. Beneath the figure are two medallions illustrative of the qualities of the true knight-one shows an ancient ship set on fire in battle and a single survivor manning it-illustrating fearlessness, the other shows a youth giving drink to a fallen foe-typifying mercy Wooden board with WW1 names on three panels placed in the centre of rear wall. Tracery pattern with thistle in centre carved above WW1 names. Grape and vine leaf border on three sides. Additional board with WW2 names mounted on wall to the right. Inscriptions carved in relief on both boards.
