  • The Dundee Courier of 7 July 1919 reported on a memorable memorial service in Edenshead UF Church, Gateside. Two memorial windows, presented by Mr and Mrs RD Thom, in memory of their only son, Captain J Flockhart Thom, MC, Fife and Forfar Yeomanry, and of his comrades in arms from the village of Gateside who also made the supreme sacrifice were dedicated at the morning service by the Rev DW Greenfield. The windows, one on either side of the pulpit, are of artistic design, beautifully tinted, and depict armoured warriors, one receiving the Crown of Life bearing the Shield of Faith and the other advancing with the Sword of Justice... It was stated that the other window [with the roll of honour] was to be regarded as a posthumous gift from Captain Thom himself. The window was designed and executed by Messrs A Ballantine & Son, Edinburgh.
