- TO THE MEMORY OF/ JOHN SHEPHERD/ LATE A CAPTAIN IN THE ROYAL MARINES/ WHO ON THE JULY 1805, WHILE ENGAGED UNDER THE IMMORTAL NELSON/ IN AN ATTACK ON THE HARBOUR OF BOULOGNE/ RECEIVED A SEVERE WOUND IN THE HEAD, WHICH AFTER AFFLICTING HIM/ FOR TEN YEARS BROUGHT HIM TO AN UNTIMELY GRAVE/ ON 3RD NOVEMBER 1815 IN THE 34TH YEAR OF HIS AGE./ THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY HIS DISCONSOLATE WIDOW AS A SMALL TESTIMONY OF HER AFFECTIONATE AND A TRIBUTE TO THOSE/ DOMESTIC VIRTUES WHICH ENDEARED HIM/ TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS
