Description
Book of Remembrance, with a cover of blue goatskin that bears the gilt-tooled Brighton coat of arms. Within are the illuminated vellum pages that record approximately 800 names in alphabetical order, including military and civilian casualties. (When it was on display at St Peter's Church in York Place, Brighton, the Book was kept within a glazed oak cabinet, beneath a silver Sanctuary lamp).

2016: The Book of Remembrance was transferred to The Keep from St Peter's Church in York Place, Brighton, where it had been on continuous display since being unveiled, dedicated and placed within a glazed case there in November 1952. Upon transfer to The Keep, the Book was passed to the Conservator, but digital images of its pages were made available to visitors on computers within the Reference Room of the premises.

  • West Sussex Gazette 13/11/1952 (page 6) reported the unveiling/dedication of the Book of Remembrance at St Peter's Church, "containing the names of some 800 Brightonians who fell in the last war"..

  • Brighton Herald 15/11/1952 reported the unveiling at length, and included a photograph of the service.
