Description
Cenotaph with the two county (Cumberland and Westmorland) , Carlisle City and Regimental (Royal Regiment of Artillery, Border Regiment and Westmorland & Cumberland Yeomanry) crests at base, also the devices of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Royal Army Medical Corps. Laurel wreaths and palm branches carved in relief at top. Stands on a raised platform (30 feet square and 6 feet high) mound with steps and enclosed by railings. Inscription to men and women of local regiments of WW1. There is a bronze plaque for WW2. The area is surrounded by speared cast-iron area railings, with a gate open to the public. The memorial includes two park benches, both with inscriptions.

History
Feb 2012: Repairs cost £14,897 including a £3,500 grant from the War Memorials Trust. Includes repairs to railings.; 2007: The Carlisle City Council have carried out repairs, rebedding and repointing the uppermost stones; January 2005-railings damaged by severe flooding, repaired Oct-Nov 2005 at a cost of c£2,000. The 2012 work was undertaken by Roland Hill Ltd of Parsonby, Cumbria.

Details: In 1920 The Citizens League purchased the area for £11,500 and in a joint scheme with the Corporation (City Council), Rickerby Park was dedicated as a memorial to the fallen of the Great War. See our record 54127 for details of the park. The Cenotaph is located in the park.
