- Description
- As in the quoted Reference, the Great War Memorial has three elements - the oak screen in the west porch of the church, on which originally the names of 18 men were inscribed, the carved oak communion table, and the carved oak eagle lectern. The names of the fallen now appear on panels each side of the doors in the screen, above which is an elaborately-carved cross with IHS at its centre. The WW1 names appear to the left of the doors, the WW2 names to the right. It would appear that the memorial on the screen was changed at least once - certainly to add the names of the WW2 casualties post-WW2, but perhaps also to add a further 27 names to the WW1 list at some time between the wars, as there are now 45 names inscribed. It appears that the WW1 names were inscribed across both of the panels, but were removed to sit together on the left-hand panel to release the right-hand panel for the WW2 names. The title for the WW2 column appears to have originally been for WW1 casualties, with the dates changed. The inscriptions are incised. The communion table has the words 'In Remembrance' carved in relief across its front, while the base of the lectern bears an incised inscription.
