POWERFUL/ ONE OF THE NAVAL BRIGADE/ WHO WORKED THE GUNS AT LADYSMITH/ BY WHICH SOUTH AFRICA WAS SAVED./ HE WAS BORN AT BOLTON-LE-SANDS/ AND DIED AT LANCASTER NOVR. 27TH 1900/ AGED 28 YEARS/ HIS DEATH WAS HASTENED BY THE HARDSHIPS OF WAR/ THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED TO HIS HONOUR/ BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN HIS NATIVE PLACE
