- History
- In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £460 towards repairs to one of the gate posts. One of the finials had split, which had evidently been caused by a ferrous pin holding it in place. As the rust was spreading the severity of the crack was increasing so it was necessary to also repair the damage. The finial was carefully lifted off the gate post and the rusting dowel was removed. All Lanchester war memorial gates © Lanchester and Burnhope PCC, 2014evidence of rust was removed from the stone and a new base stone was created using a mould taken of the original then the original finial was re-attached using a stainless steel dowel and was secured in place using a lime mortar. Finally, the custodian applied a SmartWater solution to the bronze plaque and other metal elements of the memorial as part of InMemoriam2014.
