- Description
- Cenotaph standing on a two-stepped flagged-stone base. On the south eastern face there is the description in bronze lettering. Above this is a large round-headed alcove with a bronze panel depicting a soldier's farewell to his wife and child. The north eastern face has a similar alcove with a panel depicting a soldier carrying a wounded comrade. The two side faces have smaller circular alcoves in which are bronze panels depicting the two principal industries of the town, steelmaking and mining. On the upper part of the cenotaph in the centre of all four sides are carved the coats of arms of the County of Cumberland, Workington Borough Council and the badges of the Border Regt and the Royal Artillery. Above the carvings the cenotaph reduces in width and depth and is terminated by a lamp. A plain lead casket containing the Roll of Sacrifice with 554 names was sealed inside the memorial, and a similar one with 170 names was added in the 1950s.
