Description
Wall-mounted, landscape-oriented, large rectangular white marble tablet, fixed to a dark grey marble base. Fixed to the top-centre of the white tablet is a stylised cross and scroll; fixed to the bottom-centre is a stylised wreath and ribbon, both of bronze. The inscription is in incised black lettering.

  • St Paul's, Barton website; History section: 'A stained glass window in the northern wall of the church was placed there by Elizabeth, the widow of Rev. William Henry Nutter, M.A. This window depicts St. Luke the healer, and is between the memorial tablets to the fallen in the First and Second World Wars.   • Isle of Wight County Press, 22 Nov 1919: reported that, at a meeting held at the Parish Hal the previous Monday, the design for the memorial, made from St Ann's marble, was approved. (Designed by Mr C Dodsworth; a white marble tablet of 6 feet by 4 feet 3 inches high, the grey tablet base to be 4 inch es greater all round; supplied and fitted on the north wall by Messrs. Garrett & Haysom of Southampton for an estimated cost of £118).
  • Hampshire Advertiser - Saturday 05 June 1920 (page 10) reported: 'ISLE OF WIGHT MEMORIALS. The war memorial of Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight, is taking the form of a large Portland stone cross, with marble name tablet, to be erected in the parish churchyard. A massive white marble tablet, on a base of St. Anne’s marble, bearing the names of four officers and 120 men connected with St. Paul’s, Barton, Isle of Wight, who fell in the war, has been placed in the Parish Church as the war memorial. www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000495/19200605/225/0010
