Description
TIERED, ORNATE COLUMN WITH LAUREL WREATHS AND CROSS DEPICTED ON IT. MEMORIAL MADE FROM GREENLAW STONE. A SEPARATE PLAQUE HAS BEEN ADDED AT THE BOTTOM OF ONE OF THE FACES GIVING THE NAMES OF THE FALLEN FROM WW2. From the War Memorials online website - Elaborate memorial with central block housed below large, flat topped, square roof supported by 4 Ionic columns. The roof supports a stone coffin which in turn supports a smaller version of the column supported roof topped by a dome. The front face of the lower block has a cross & dedication, with the sides showing names, all in black lettering. All stands on a substantial platform in plot surrounded, by iron railings, placed on platform at road junction.

(main face) PRO DEO ET PRO PATRIA/ (cross / sword)/ TO THOSE MEN OF SPENNYMOOR/ URBAN DISTRICT WHO FELL/ WHILE DEFENDING/ OUR LIBERTY/ LET THEIR NAMES BE CHERISHED/ WITH GRATITUDE AND PRIDE AND THE/ REMEMBRANCE OF THEIR STEADFAST/ ENDURANCE AND GALLANT SACRIFICE/ BE ENSHRINED IN THE HEARTS OF/ THIS PEOPLE FOR EVER/ AND LET THIS LAND/ WHOSE HEARTHS THEY SAVED FROM SHAME/ FOR MANY AND MANY AN AGE PROCLAIM/ ETERNAL HONOUR TO THEIR NAME (other three faces all comprise names of the fallen from WW1 and is headed OUR GLORIOUS DEAD.
