Description
PLAIN CONCAVE-HEADED TABLET PLACED WITHIN AT EITHER END OF THE WALL. THEY ARE SURROUNDED BY AN ORNATE HAND-PAINTED FOLIATE DESIGN IN BLUE/ GREEN. DEDICATORY INSCRIPTION AT THE TOP. PAINTING CENTRALLY HUNG BETWEEN TWO TABLETS FEATURING SCENE FROM BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR. PAINTED IN 1898 BY CHARLES DIXON (1872-1934), EXHIBITOR AT RA AND ELSEWHERE, AND PURCHASED IN 1921 FOR 50 GUINEAS. PAINTING PLACED IN THE CENTRE. SHIELDS FLANK THE TABLETS. ALSO NATIONAL FLOWERS ARE PAINTED IN THE BORDERS.HERALDIC CRESTS OF ENGLAND AND MIDDLESEX (THREE SEAXES WITH CROWN ABOVE).ORIGINALLY THE WW1 NAMES WERE PAINTED ONTO 2 SHIELDS BOTH SIDES OF THE WALL. IN 1950, THE ORIGINAL LIST OF NAMES WAS PAINTED OUT AND REPAINTED IN THE PRESENT FORMAT: WW1 ON THE LEFT AND WW2 ON THE RIGHT.

BUILDING IS PLANNED FOR DEMOLITION (THE PRESS POTTERS BAR EDITION 4 SEP. 2003) SCHOOL CLOSED AND THE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE IS NOW BASED IN THE BUILDING DECEMBER 2002: TELEPHONE CALL FROM ENGLISH HERITAGE. THEY ARE TRYING TO GET THE MEMORIAL LISTED AND THUS PROTECTED. THE BUILDING IS PLANNED FOR DEMOLITION (SEP. 2003). DEVELOPERS HAVE AGREED IN PRINCIPLE TO CONSTRUCT A NEW MEMORIAL IN THE BLOCK OF FLATS THEY ARE PLANNING TO BUILD ON THE SITE.
