THE MEMORIAL IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM WAS MADE OF LIMESTONE (SLIGHT WEATHERING) & WAS DEDICATED TOT HE FALLEN EMPLOYEES OF THE COUNCIL IN WW1. THE CROSS STOOD ORIGINALLY ON A 4 STEPPED OCTAGONAL BASE. SINCE AMALGAMATION OF LONDON BOROUGHS & WW2, 3 NEW POLISHED GRANITE PLATES WITH THE INSCRIPTIONS HAVE BEEN AFFIXED TO THE TOPMOST STEP. THE WHOLE MONUMENT HAS SINCE BEEN "JACKED UP" ONTO A SQUARE BASE OF POLISHED BLACK LARVIKITE (PROBABLY MADE FROM OLD SHOP FRONTS WHICH WAS ITS PRIMARY USE) [INFORMATION FROM DUPLICATE FORM COMPLETED BY MIKE TEBBUTT]

  • East London Observer - Saturday 11 September 1920 Employees of Hackney Borough Council are proposing to raise a memorial to their colleagues who fell in the war. It will take the form of a cross of Portland stone, and bear a suitable inscription, the names of the men being, inscribed on the three front panels of the octagonal base. The Council will be asked to allow the memorial to be erected in the Town Hall grounds.
  • Local Blitz firefighters honoured news.hackney.gov.uk/local-blitz-firefighters-honoured/ Three firefighters that died in Hackney during the Blitz were honoured at a special ceremony on Monday (February 27). The servicemen’s names have been added to the plaque at the Civic Memorial in Hackney Town Hall Square. They are: auxillary fireman Albert Clarke who died during service in Tabernacle Street, Shoreditch in 1941; auxillary fireman M Van Holst; who died in service in Stoke Newington in 1940 and finally fireman Leonard Wilmore who died in Hackney Hospital in 1941.
  • East London Observer - Saturday 27 November 1920 As a memorial to the thirty workmen and members of the Hackney Borough Council staff who lost their lives in the war, a granite cross, erected in the grounds of the Town Hall, was unveiled by the ex-Mayoress.
