- Description
- Nowy-headed board, whose 8 columns record the names and military service details of those who enlisted in the armed forces. [N.B. The memorial's spelling of some surnames differs from official records, e.g. the man listed on it as Private 'B. Borodesky' is recorded by CWGC as 'Barnett Baradosky'; his surname is similarly listed as 'Baradosky' in the 'British Jewry Book Of Honour, 1914-1920'. The memorial records several enlistees as serving in 'the 'JUDs'; this was an unofficial name for the 38th, 39th, 40th, 41st and 42nd ('Judaean') Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers].

- Hull Daily Mail - Friday 05 November 1915 (page 3) printed the following letter: 'JEWISH ROLL OF HONOUR. TO THE EDITOR Of THE "DAILY MAIL." Sir, - Through the medium of the Mail I beg to inform the Hull Jewish community that I am engaged in preparing a roll of honour of all Hull Jews in His Majesty's forces. I find that many have enlisted, and unless parents help me and send full particulars as to name, rank, and regiment of their sons, this roll of honour will be faulty and the names of many omitted. I also desire all recent Hull Jewish recruits to endeavour to see before they leave the town, so that I can provide them with a copy of the authorised Jewish soldier's prayer-book, and also try and keep in touch with them. l am, Sir, etc., SAMUEL GROSS (Jewish Minister). - Hull Daily Mail - Wednesday 28 October 1998 (page 4) reported: 'HULL: Plans to convert the former Western Synagogue in Linnaeus Street into a new complex of self-contained flats is expected to be approved by city councillors today. The Synagogue, which is a listed building, has been empty for several years. The proposed facelift also includes the demolition of the former church hall and the creation of a small car park for residents'. www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0003600/19981028/004/0004
- Hull Daily News - Monday 23 April 1917 (page 3) reported: 'THE GOOD FIGHT. HULL JEWS' TRIBUTE TO SOLDIER BRETHREN. A Roll of Honour on which is inscribed the names of over 100 members of the Hull Hebrew Western congregation was unveiled by Mrs Louis Levi at the Linnaeus-street Synagogue yesterday afternoon. The Boy Scouts associated with the Western Congregation lined the approaches. The Roll of Honour was covered with the Union Jack. The Rev S Gross, the pastor, in opening the proceedings, said they were witnessing a roll containing over a hundred names out of a total membership of about 180. It was in all senses of the words an occasion of pride; not of joyful pride because they could not feel joyful when they considered the lengthening list of those who would never return. Their pride was in the fact that so many had gone forth to fight the good battle because the call of duty bade them go. Mr B S Jacobs, in asking Mrs Levi to unveil the roll of honour, expressed the gratitude of the congregation to Mr and Mrs Levi for presenting the same. Mrs Levi said: "I unveil this roll of honour to the glory of our men who have answered their country's call." Many of the young men serving the country have won distinction on the battle field, one of the number being Private Shapero, at home wounded. He was awarded the Military Medal for saving a corporal under heavy fire. Others have rendered equally valorous service'. www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0003873/19170423/003/0003
