Description
Stained glass window of three lights, designed by David Angus Scott and made by Thompson and Snee of Gateshead, featuring a figure in each light. In the centre light is St. George spearing the dragon. Above him is a grisaille figure of Justice. Below him is a shield surmounted by a crest and bearing the dates “1939-1945”. In the left hand light a soldier carries a sword, with his left arm cradling a child, while at his feet another child is playing with a doll. Above him is a grisaille picture of a bound kneeling youth and a bearded figure (?Abraham and Isaac). In the right hand light is a saint bearing a staff. At his feet is a child is feeding the birds. Above him the grisaille figure is of Christ the Good Shepherd with his sheep. Running across all three windows underneath the figures is a scroll bearing the words "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" in gold lettering outlined in black using lower case letters. At the bottom of the right and left lights are grisaille circles featuring the pelican plucking at her breast to feed her young, and the phoenix dying in the fire and rising again. At the foot of the middle light is a shield with the badge of the A.O.P. and the dates "1939-1945". The dedication runs along the extreme bottom of all three lights, painted in sans serif letters.
