- Description
- Restored battlefield cross painted white with moulded edge painted black and gold. At the top, on either side and above and below the crosspiece are triangles each containing green leaves and two roses in half relief, one white and one red. The dedication is on the cross, with lettering incised and painted black. On either side of the upright of the cross are details of its erection, dereliction and reclamation, in gilded lettering raised on a sunken background, with a red outline to each word. Below the cross is the badge of the Northumberland Fusiliers, St.George and the Dragon, in half relief. Details of the dedication at the bottom are in Roman capitals, incised and gilded.

- On the upright of the cross: R.I.P./ 5 B N/ NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS/ QUO/ FATA/ VOCANT/ IN/ MEMORY/ OF THE OFFICERS,/ N.C.O.s/ AND MEN/ WHO FELL/ IN/ ACTION/ DURING/ SEPTEMBER,/ OCTOBER/ AND NOVEMBER 1916/ To left of the upright: THIS CROSS WAS/ MADE BY THE/ PIONEERS OF THE/ 5TH BATTALION/ NORTHUMBERLAND/ FUSILIERS IN/ FRANCE AND WAS/ ERECTED DEC 1916/ IN HIGH WOOD/ WHICH WAS TAKEN/ AFTER REPEATED/ ATTACKS IN WHICH/ THE BATTALION TOOK/ A PROMINENT PART To right of the upright: 21 YEARS LATER/ IT WAS FOUND/ THERE FALLEN AND NEGLECTED/ BY MAJOR GENERAL/ J.R.M.
