Site: £12013 14s 8d
Comments: £14013 14s 8d was raised from the citizens and a strip of land (valued at £500) was given: £4,000 was used to buy Lower Higham Estate, £2,000 for the memorial and the remainder was used for scholarships/grants (for 268 children of the fallen to receive £4 pa between the ages of 11-16 from the Children's Fund) and Asplands maternity home (opened 1 Oct 1931, closed 1973 & demolished- the pillars were moved to the entrance to Werneth Low and a commemorative plaque erected-see photograph). £200 was invested, the income from each would be devoted to provide a civic wreath to be placed on the Memorial on Peace Day every year, and also to maintain the Memorial in good condition. The names are listed on plaques in the Town Hall (Ref 3258), although there is a discrepancy in numbers.
