Description
Standing in a paved area on a base of two, octagonal paved steps, surmounted by a plinth, an obelisk. The wreath at the top of the south face of the obelisk is worn and the inscription is no longer legible. It appears from Hackney Council Planning Committee document dated 15th July 1969 (see References) that this was originally the WW1 memorial for Haggerston Road School, which was demolished in the 1930s.
Inscription
The inscription is no longer visible - according to newspaper report of unveiling in 1921 it read: "Erected by the Old Boys’ Club. To the Glory of God and in memory of the old boys of Haggerston Road School who fell in the Great War, 1914-1918. ‘Greater Love hath no man than this’ "
