- Description
- Two scarlet Morocco bound books, one for each war. Side by side in a glass-topped oak display case, mounted on an open-backed desk/pedestal, the front of which is decorated with two linenfold panels divided by a muntin; sides are also panelled in linenfold. The lid is screwed down. Books - Elaborate gold tooling. Handwritten in black ink with red caps, giving, in alphabetical order, brief biographical details and a photograph of every service person from the parish killed in action. WW1 - front cover includes stylised Glastonbury thorn above title, a chalice emanating beams of light. The banded spine alternates an encircled rose between two crosses. Memorial inscription on the flyleaf handwritten in blue and gold beneath a green laurel wreath encircling in red on gold the dates 1914 1918, one above the other, alongside the Arms of the Abbey in colour. The Chapel of St. George in St. John Baptist Church was partially designated as a war memorial and a reredos and East window dedicated. Two pieces of carved timber which had been part of the screen in this chapel were secured from the museum and a private house then incorporated into a resh screen. A table has been placed as the altar that is believed to have been an altar table in 1675. A pedestal for the Book of Remembrance given by the Misses Clayton, it is of ancient linen pattern panelling.
