EAST INDIA COMPANY'S/ SERVICE AT BENGAL: WHEN ON HIS RETURN TO CALCUTTA IN THE KENT/ EAST INDIAMAN, WAS SLAIN BY A MUSKET BALL FROM A FRENCH/ PRIVATEER OF 36 GUNS ON THE 7TH OF OCTOBER, 1800 IN THE BAY OF BENGAL./THE JUST PROPENSITY OF AN HONEST AND GOOD HEART/ GAVE A GODLY PRESAGE OF TALENT AND VIRTUES, ADAPTED/ TO BENEFIT, TO DELIGHT AN IMPARTIAL SOCIETY/ WHEN THE VALUED AND VERSATILE POWERS OF A VIGOROUS MIND DID ACQUIRE/ WHATEVER OF [GOODNESS] OR USE THE SCHOOL OF WESTMINSTER OR UNIVERSITY/ OF GLASGOW COULD BESTOW./ HE INDULGED THE FOND BUT FRUITLESS WISH TO RETURN TO THE EAGER EXPAECTATION AND THE ARDENT HOPE OF AN ANXIOUS FATHER WHO SAW IN HIS SON THE WELL-EARNED RECOMPENSE OF AN HONOURABLE LIFE WITHIN VIEW OF A DESTINED PORT THUS FATALLY INTERCEPTED./ RIGHTEOUS ART THOU, OH LORD, WHEN I PLED WITH THEE YET LET ME TALK WITH THEE OF THY JUDGMENTS.
