Description
A large wooden board - decorated at the top with a crown which is flanked by repeating natural patterns terminating in the top left and right hand corner in two large, stylised leafs. Below this is a well carved border which is decorated variously with, at the top, five roses; pairs of large and small candles on the left and right and at the base a simple, curving, carved design above which reads an inscription, in medieval-type script, ‘By their sacrifice we live.’ On the central panel a cross is flanked with two small, carved candles and two more roses, these seem to be Yorkshire roses, perhaps of the Yorkshire Regiment. Below these are dates, an inscription and the names of men who served during the war- there is no distinction made in terms of rank and it is unclear whether the list represents simply those who served or those who died in service. NB, note added 2019: this must be served only, the parish is too small for this number of casualties.
