- TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE TWO SONS OF/ JOHN PRESTON OF MEARBECK AND ELIZABETH MARY/ HIS WIFE, DAUGHTER OF JOHN PROCTOR OF LONG PRESTON/ JOHN STARKIE PRESTON, THEIR ELDER SON, 2ND LIEUT/ 1ST BATTALION ROYAL SCOTS (LOTHIAN REGT) AFTER FIGHTING/ AT STORMBERG AND ELSEWHERE IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR/ YIELDED UP HIS LIFE FOR HIS QUEEN AND COUNTRY AT/ DEWETSDORP THE 27TH JUNE 1900 AGED 21 YEARS/ THOMAS HAWORTH PRESTON, THEIR YOUNGER SON, CAPTAIN/ 1ST BATTALION EAST LANCASHIRE REGT. FOUGHT IN SOUTH AFRICA/ MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES. AFTER HE SERVED IN INDIA AND/ FORMED ONE OF THE EXPEDITIONARY FORCES TO FRANCE IN AUGUST 1914./ HE WAS PRESENT AT THE BATTLE OF LE CATEAU, THE AISNE AND THE/ MARNE, AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION BY THE GERMANS NEAR PLOEGSTEERT/ IN FLANDERS, THE 17TH NOVEMBER 1914, AGED 33 YEARS.
