Description
A decorative hand-painted Roll of Honour in an oak frame. The names of the 53 men from Halifax Borough Police who served in the War are recorded in three panels, the middle one of which lists the 7 of them who died.
Inscription
(Exact wording unknown. According to a press report of its unveiling, the Roll of Honour was headed "Halifax Borough Police Force. Members who served in the Great War for King and Country", with the dates 1914 and 1919 and the words "Freedom" and "Justice" occupying a prominent position. The 53 names listed upon it were in three sections, the central one of which listed the names of the 7 men who had died ).

  • Halifax Evening Courier 18/9/1920 (page 4) reported the unveiling of the memorial the previous afternoon, in the recreation room at the Borough Police Court. The report described the memorial as an oak-framed hand-painted Roll of Honour, listing the names of the 53 men who had served in the Armed Forces, seven of whom had died, and stated that the names were set out in three panels; the centre one containing the names of those who had died. Part of the wording on the Roll of Honour was also reported.
