Description
Large rectangular brass plaque with incised and enamelled border. Whole is set within a triangular pedimented wooden frame. Foliate and floral design carved border on the plaque. Flowers in red and while enamel. Enamelled shields in each corner, arms of York and England in the top part and badges of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and the East Lancashire in the bottom.

THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED / BY THE SUBSCRIBERS TO THE HEBDEN BRIDGE & DISTRICT / WAR FUND / IN MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING / LOCAL SOLDIERS AND AMBULANCE VOLUNTEERS / WHO FELL IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1899-1902 / (Names) / AND IN HONOUR OF OTHER LOCAL RESERVISTS / WHO READILY RESPONDED TO THEIR COUNTRY'S CALL / AND OF OTHER THIRTY-ONE MEMBERS OF THE / HEBDEN BRIDGE ST JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE WHO / VOLUNTEERD FOR ACTIVE SERVICE AND RENDERED / EFFECTIVE AIDTO THE SICK & WOUNDED IN THE WAR / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS
