Description
Pedestalled, nowy arched grey marble tablet carrying three white marble tablets with chequered borders, bearing the Names, which are incised and infilled in black. Within the arch is a gilded cross surrounded by a laurel wreath, with a frieze running beneath the pedestal decorated with carved olive branches on gilded grounds each side of painted shields carrying the Legs of Man to the left and St George's cross to the right. A gilded incised Dedication runs along the bottom. The memorial includes a pair of lamps which were placed on the pillared gates of the church. Presumably originally gas lights, the stands presently carry modern electric fittings, with the dates of the conflict cast into the bases. The relationship of the tablets and the church's WW1 Roll of Honour (WMR 28341) is obscure. There are 42 names on the tablets, but only 20 of them also appear on the RoH - and only 7 of them are marked as 'Missing' or 'Deceased'. There are also 4 names, listed as missing or deceased on the RoH, which are not inscribed on the tablets.
