  • Mansfield Reporter, Friday 18th April 1919 (page 5) reported: Quite a number of religious bodies in the county have resolved to honour the memory of those who hare fallen in the war. At Linby a lych-gate will probably be provided as a memorial, and at Newstead it is hoped that the long-promised church will he built. Annesley has lost heavily, including two brother officers of the Musters' family, as well as a brother-in-law, and will do something to keep alive the memory of those who have fallen. St. Thomas's Church, East Kirkby, claims to have lost sixty men who were connected with the church, and it has been decided to place a memorial window in the church, and at St. Wilfrid's, in the same parish, a brass tablet is to be erected. Here fifty-one men have given their lives for their country. www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001825/19190418/092/0005

  • Mansfield Reporter Friday 27th June 1919 (page 3) reported: KIRKBY'S MEMORIAL TO THE FALLEN. A dedicatory service was held at the Parish Church of St. Wilfrid's, on Sunday morning, when the Ven. Archdeacon Hacking, of Southwell, unveiled a stained glass window, which has been placed in the church by the local Red Cross Society, to commemorate the memory of the 180 Kirkby men who have fallen during the war. The window ,which is beautiful in design, is inscribed as follows: "Greater love bath no man than this, that he laid down his life for his friends." A brass tablet is placed underneath the window, bearing the words: "To the glory of God, and in memory of the men from the parish of Kirkby-in-Ashfield, who have fallen in the great war, 1914-1918." Preceding the service, a church parade was held, the "fall in" being at the cross roads, East Kirkby. and those taking part included: "Comrades of the Great War," Cadets, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides. Red Cross Detachments. and St. John's Ambulance Brigade. The Archdeacon conducted the service, and unveiled the window, assisted by the Rev. S. M. Wheeler, vicar of St. Thomas's, and the Rev. J. W. Wilkinson, curate at St. Wilfrid's. During the service the choir rendered the anthem, "Send out Thy Light." www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001825/19190627/068/0003
