Description

Central 'triptych' panel of alabaster (bearing the dedicatory inscriptions), surrounded by 4 further alabaster panels (bearings names), within an oak frame. The centre segment of the dedicatory inscription panel has a relief-carved gilt cross, intertwined with green laurel wreath, flanked by the dates 1914 1919, and includes depictions of red poppies; the left segment depicts a hand on a green and gilt background, above an inscription; the right segment depicts a gold crown and wreath, above a further inscription.

Beeston Gazette and Echo, Saturday 5th July 1919 (page 2) printed an architect drawing with the report: 'HUCKNALL PARISH CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL. Above we give an illustration of the War Memorial Chapel it has been decided to place in Hucknall Church. Already the work has been put in hand, the structural alterations being undertaken by Messrs. Fish and Sons, of Nottingham, and the ecclesiastical portions by Messrs. Bridgman and Sons, of Lichfield. The cost of the entire scheme is estimated at £2,200. In explaining the scheme in the current number of the Parish Magazine, Canon Barber, vicar, says: - The scheme, represented by the above illustration, answers in every respect, we claim, to what a Memorial should be. It consecrates a part of the House of God to the memory of the fallen. It perpetuates the thought of their sacrifice. It encourages the hope that they are not dead but living. Moreover it binds us to them in our approach to God, and helps us to realise the strength of that Spiritual bond, which in the Communion of Saints, unites us with all the faithful departed. We also claim that it is a worthy Memorial in that it is to be subscribed for entirely by voluntary gifts. To raise money for such an object as a memorial to the fallen by popular methods, such as concerts, whist drives, etc., is nothing more than an insult to the dead, and an outrage on the feelings of the bereaved relatives. We are inviting people to give thankofferings - gifts from the heart - to express gratitude to God for their deliverance from a cruel foe, and for their redemption by the blood of the gallant men who have fallen in the Great War. Our Memorial will, therefore, be the best possible memorial - the expression of our gratitude and love. The names of all the fallen will be inscribed on Alabaster Tablets in the Memorial Chapel. Whilst the memorial scheme is being carried out, the reconstruction of the organ and a platform are being proceeded with. Nottingham Journal, Monday 7th June 1920 (page 2) reported: 'A RESTORED CHAPEL. Hucknall Church’s Beautiful Memorial. Various memorials have been placed in places of worship in Hucknall to the memory of fallen men connected with those particular denominations, but the largest scheme to date is the restoration of the ancient Chantry Chapel on the north side of the chancel of the Hucknall Parish Church, where are recorded in alabaster the names of all men - some - 260 - from this parish who made the great sacrifice. In the midst of this roll of honour a triptych is set, with a cross and crown on either side. Gifts of Windows, The memorial chapel is separated from the main body of the church by oak screens, and the three windows are the gifts respectively of the Boys' Brigade, Mr. E. Bostock, the verger, and Canon Barber, vicar. In addition there are special panels provided by parents giving additional particulars of their sons' heroism. The whole forms a beautiful memorial in a renowned church, and a panel on the outer wall of the chapel records its purpose. So far, over £1,000 has been raised by voluntary gifts, and about £400 was required before yesterday’s services. Bishop’s Sermon. There was not a vacant seat in the historic church at the dedication service yesterday, when the Bishop of Southwell preached the sermon on "God is love." He showed that whilst the war had shattered the faith of many people by taking from them their sons, he reminded them that the innocent Christ suffered even more agony in order that a people who had rebelled might be brought to that former state of unity with God. Afterwards the Bishop, clergy and churchwardens proceeded to the lady chapel, where the dedicatory sentences were uttered by Dr. Hoskyns, who also consecrated the role [sic] of honour.
