Description
Free standing irregular rough hewn stone of remembrance with three separate brass plaque inset; two fixed to the northern aspect and one fixed to the western aspect. Stone of remembrance is set within a paved and walled area approximately 6.6m deep and 5.50m wide. Upper plaque has etched plan of airfield when it was operational, RAF crest and SOE (Special Operations Executive) badge, "Pegasus" the crest of all British and Commonwealth Airborne Forces representing the Parachute Regiment, Gliderpilot Regiment, Gliderborne Troops, 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, SAS and supporting Corp Personnel. Polish Parachute Brigade wings, and the Bald Eagle badge of the USA 101st Airborne Division. Beneath this is a horse glider carved into the stone. Lower plaque has an etched profile of a Halifax towing a Hamilcar glider. On the reverse of the stone is a plaque featuring Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm insignia.
