Inscription
TO THE MEMORY OF LIEUT. ROBERT KNOWLES A NATIVE OF THIS PARISH WHO VOLUNTEERED MAY 6, 1811 FOR THE 1ST ROYAL LANCS. MILITIA INTO THE 7TH REGMT. OF FUSILIERS, THEN INVOLVED WITH THE BRITISH ARMY IN THE EXPULSION OF THE FRENCH FROM SPAIN. HE DISTINGUISHED HIMSELF AT THE TAKING OF CIUDAD RODRIGO & AT BARDAJOS, WHERE HE COMMANDED PART OF A DUTY APPONTED TO STORM FORT ST. ROQUE - SUCH WAS HIS INTREPIDITY THAT BY FIRST SCALING THE WALL, HE SUCCEEDED IN HIS ENTERPRISE, HE OPENED THE GATES TO THE REMAINDER OF THE DETACHMENT AND RECEIVED THE COMMAND OF THE FORT. HE BEHAVED WITH MUCH COMPOSURE AT SALAMANCA & VITTORIA, AT THE FIRST OF WHICH HE WAS SEVERELY WOUNDED. THIS BRAVE YOUNG MAN FELL AT THE PASS OF RONCEVALLES IN THE PYRENEES JULY 25, 1813 IN THE 24TH YEAR OF HIS AGE. THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED AS A FIRST TRIBUTE TO SUCH HEROISM BY HIS FELLOW TOWNSMEN 1814.
