Description
Brass nowy-headed plaque. Two columns incised either side with the war dates at top of each. The names of the fallen originally painted in red. (The original wooden frame does not appear on the item in the 2018 Museum display).

Comments: The cost of the memorial was borne by the residents of Mollart Street. It was originally erected on the wall of Bethseda Manse, which was made available at no cost by the Trustees of Bethseda Church.

  • Staffordshire Sentinel 20/4/1920 (page 5): reported the unveiling of the memorial, commenting that although Mollart Street comprised only "some 60 houses", 57 of its residents had enlisted, of whom 11 had died. www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000347/19200420/094/0005
  • The Mollart Street WW1 Memorial is catalogued by The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery as "The Spitfire Memorial". (One of those named on it as having served was "E. Mitchell", i.e. Herbert Eric Mitchell, whose brother Reginald Joseph Mitchell designed the Spitfire aircraft; their parents Herbert and Eliza Jane Mitchell lived at 4 Mollart Street in Hanley).
