- BASE SURMOUNTED BY DOUBLE OCTAGONAL PLINTH , SHAFT AND PLAIN LATIN CROSS. INSCRIPTION IN RAISED LETTERING ON THE SIDES OF THE PLINTHS

- TOP PLINTH, 4.30, 6 AND 7.30 FACE; BOTTOM STEP 2.30 AND 6 O'CLOCK FACE: TO THE MEMORY OF/ ONE WHO NEVER/ WEARIED OF IN HELPING OTHERS, LIONEL H. D. FORTESCUE, MAJOR, SECOND-IN-COMMAND, XVII LANCERS. THIRD SON OF HUGH, THIRD EARL FORTESCUE, HE WAS BORN ON XIX NOVEMBER MDCCCLVII AT CASTLE HILL. HE FELL IN THE ACTION OF DIAMOND HILL IN SOUTH AFRICA ON JUNE XI, MCM, AND WAS BURIED HARD BY THE FIELD OF BATTLE.
