- Description
- Ornately-carved frame of dark-stained oak, with 3 glazed panels. The left panel (representing War) contains a depiction of Mars. The right panel (representing Peace) depicts a female figure 'Pax', holding a sheaf of corn and cornucopia, with a white dove overhead, and 4 children at her feet. The central panel's floral border is headed by a ribbon scroll (inscribed 'Roll of Honour' in gilt paint). Immediately beneath is a green laurel wreath (containing a depiction of St George slaying the dragon); the bow at the foot of the wreath depicts Hypnos (sleep). The upper section of the Roll of Honour includes cameo photographs of 39 of the 42 servicemen who died. The lower section comprises 7 columns of handwritten names. (The central column lists the 42 men who died; the other 6 columns list those who survived). The upper edge of the frame surround has relief-carved green-painted laurel wreaths; the columns between the glazed panels are headed by red/green/gold painted capitals; the lower edge of the frame contains the dates 1914 and 1919.

- History
- When the memorial was unveiled at the Excelsior Club in May 1920, its frame was described as being 'covered in gilt'; if that description was accurate, then the frame has since been modified, as it is now of dark-stained oak, with details such as the wreaths etc picked out in coloured paint. [The memorial was temporarily relocated to the St John Ambulance Hut in Renforth Street (dates/reason unknown), but consequently returned to the Excelsior Club, where it is now displayed].
