Endeavours were made to keep the fire in check till after the ceremony so as not to interfere with the firemen, but when the men were drawn up at the memorial, awaiting the arrival of Earl Beatty. a motorist arrived and said that field and trees were on fire near Walton Cottage Hospital. The firemen left immediately and put out the flames when they had reached the hospital fencing. ---
