- Description
- Narrow, high-ceilinged Scottish Gothic chapel with ornately carved wooden choir stalls facing each other, elevated lectern (which includes the carver Archie Dawson's face), and a carving of St Mungo above the 9 WW1 stone name tablets on the east wall. Choir includes flowers, tiny animals, angels and other figures including a smoking monkey. Stained glass windows, hanging lights and angels carved underneath ceiling beams. The 9 WW1 tablets each have the names in 3 columns engraved in gold. The 6 WW2 stone tablets each have the names incised in two columns, and there is a 21st century additional tablet with 7 names in a single column. The chapel completes the quadrangle of Giles Gilbert Scott's main university building and the exterior complements the surrounding buildings. It includes carvings of the four evangelists, the university seal, angels and Christian symbols, and gargoyles. The names commemorated include Harry Sherwood Ranken VC, of Irvine.
