- Description
- Brick column with Portland stone base and corniced sandstone and Portland stone feature below the dedicatory panels. The column is surmounted by a Portland stone carving of a kneeling, sorrowing angel with furled wings proffering a laurel wreath, facing East. Below the angel, and above the dedicatory panels, there is a carved sandstone Latin Cross emerging from an elaborate Portland stone carving centred on the Royal Standard, with military accoutrements - helmets, weapons, and standards - behind. The Great War dedication is below, with the names on the flanking faces. The WW2 dedication and names are on the reverse of the column. The names and dedications are incised and rubricated on slate panels within nowy headed Portland stone frames. The dates of the conflicts are incised on the Portland stone stratum of the cornice. The memorial stands within a sandstone representation of a Celtic cross, with the shafts forming the steps, and the central wheel being laid out with bricks. The memorial stands within a traffic island.
