- RENOWN AND LETITIA...DUNKIRK/ RENOWN LO88 BUILT 1928 BY MR W HAYWARD/ SOUTHEND-ON-SEA/ LETITIA LO220 BUILT 1937 BY JOHNSON & JAGO/ LEIGH-ON-SEA/ BOTH VESSELS TOOK PART IN THE EVACUATION/ OF THE BRITISH FORCES FROM DUNKIRK IN/ 1940. MODELS ARE IN PRITTLEWELL PRIORY/ MUSEUM. AFTER SEVERAL JOURNEYS 'RENOWN'/ WAS RETURNING EMPTY WHEN, HER ENGINES/ HAVING FAILED, AND TO BRING HER OUT OF/ DANGER, SHE WAS TAKEN IN TOW BY 'LETITIA'./ 'RENOWN' STRUCK A MINE AND WAS BLOWN/ UP; WILLIAM NOAKES (SKIPPER) AND THE/ COUSINS FRANK & LESLIE OSBORNE, TO-/ GETHER WITH A NAVAL RATING - HAROLD OSBORNE - WHO CONSTITUTED THE CREW, LOST THEIR LIVES. THE FIRST THREE NAMED WERE/ LEIGH MEN WHO HAD BEEN SCHOLARS IN THE/ SUNDAY SCHOOL OF THIS CHURCH./ SOUTHEND LIFEBOAT AND SIX OF THE LEIGH/ FISHING FLEET TOOK PART IN THE OPERATION./ IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THE SIX BAWLEYS/ ALONE RESCUED A THOUSAND SOLDIERS FROM/ THE BEACHES AT DUNKIRK./ MR FRANK BRIDGES YACHT 'PEGGY' WAS ALSO/ ENGAGED IN THIS VENTURE BUT AFTER MUCH/ EXHAUSTING SERVICE BECAME WATERLOGGED/ AND IN THE EMERGENCY HAD TO BE/ ABANDONED.
